This year, more than any time since Carver Center’s inception, our youth are facing an economic future filled with dire predictions, high unemployment and fear. Thus, it is critical that Norwalk youth with college potential learn that there is hope for their future by giving them the opportunity to experience the college environment and to picture themselves achieving in such a place. On April 12th we will embark on our 40th Annual College Tour of predominantly Historical Black College and Universities. Students will tour Tuskegee Institute, Alabama State University, University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa, Birmingham Southern College, University of Alabama at Birmingham [UAB], Miles College, A & M University, Oakwood University, Fisk University, and Tennessee State University. Our goal is to inspire our youth to pursue a higher education. A key way is to provide motivation is through first hand account from their peers who are functioning in the college environment and to give our youth the opportunity to identify with students who are already pursuing a college degree. We hope to raise the needed funds to support our annual tour. The cost of the 10-day tour is a $1,000 per student. Our goal is to be able to support up to 30 students. Carver subsidizes $700 of the per student cost. More than ever before, your contribution in these economic times matters! We are grateful for your support as we work hard to “build lifetime achievers.” Contributions can be sent to Carver Center 7 Academy Street, Norwalk, CT 06850.

On Thursday, January 14th the Carver Center hosted its annual Career Fair and there was excitement and curiosity at every corner. The Career Fair is the highlight of Carver’s “Meet the Professional Series,” where Carver students gain insight into exciting and unfamiliar careers from professionals. This event was open to all the providers of middle and high school program in Norwalk. Participants from the Nathan Hale B.A.R.K program and West Rocks Rock Climbers (Both are Carver programs) were most vocal about the interactive nature of the fair. Students interacted with the animals, exhibits, and chatted with professionals from the sports, health, military, arts, trade, banking and science industry. Majority of the students were noticeably well prepared with their questions for the professionals. Eduardo Garcia of the B.A.R.K program at Nathan Hale was saddened when the fair came to a close. He is looking forward to next year and hope we are able to attract a “famous sports player and a chef”. The event was a collaborative effort by the Carver Staff and the wonderful volunteers from the Noroton Presbyterian Church and the Congregational Church of Darien. Professionals included: guidance counselor, school administrator, fitness director, nurse, youth counselor, vet technicians, dentist, children’s author and illustrator, cartoonist, electrician, banker, engineer, EMT, National Guard, US Marines, accountant and more.

Most of us are troubled by underprivileged children who aren't keeping up with their peers. Daryl Neubecker does something about it. This New Canaan resident is a relative newcomer to the community, but she's already made a huge impact here, mostly by way of her work at the George Washington Carver Center, where she heads up the Reading Crew
